Seeking Clarity

Clarity is elusive. Photographing windows is my way of looking for clarity in a world that seems nonsensical and out of balance. The grid of a window frame tries to impose order and structure. The images in this series blend elements of the interior and the exterior world, sometimes opaque and sometimes translucent. They are mixed together, resulting in images that vary along a spectrum from chaos to order, distortion to clarity.

Windows invite us to look in, but the window may act as a barrier and the view often isn’t clear. The outside world is absorbed and reflected back at you in a whirl of distortion. It can give you a clear view or a jumbled dissonance, looking out, looking in, and sometimes looking through.

What I see when I photograph windows reflects the elusive nature of clarity, and the reality that accepting a degree of inscrutability is essential. We are never going to get all the answers we seek. Yet it is worthwhile to keep looking, searching for glimmers of clarity in the haze, and a way forward.
